Under the auspice of the CAS Academic Divisions, a panel on space science convened recently to discuss the consultative report drafted by its research teams. Chaired by CAS member Hu Wenrui, the meeting was attended by 20 or so CAS members and experts.
The participants listened to the report on frontier areas of space science and its disciplinary layout, the development of China's space station for scientific experiments, and special S&T projects in space science.
The report is based on studies in such fields as space astronomy, solar-terrestrial and space science, deep space exploration, space geodynamics, space life science, and micro-gravity. In light of national strategic needs and the development trend of space science in the world, the report proposed a major strategic S&T project to establish a space station for scientific experiment, and a research framework for basic research including frontier areas of space and its disciplinary layout, as well as ten key projects including the development of a national platform of pubic information security, manufacturing of applied materials under microgravity, space biotechnology and its application, vibration measurement and isolation studies under microgravity in space, space atomic clock, and lunar exploration.
The panelists recommended modifications on the report.
